Once a man with the name Jack found a box of old papers in a room at the top of his house.He burnt most of them, for he didn't like old things very much. But one of these papers was an old letter. At the bottom of the letter was the name of a famous writer.

"When this letter was written," Jack said, "no one knew about the writer.But now everyone knows him. Some people like to buy letters like this. I may be able to get a lot of money for this letter if I sell it to the right man."

But there were a lot of dirty marks all over the letter.

"It doesn't look nice," he thought. "No one wants to buy a letter if it's dirty. I'll have to clean it first."

So he took a piece of cloth and some water and cleaned the letter. He worked hard and took a lot of care. At last the letter looked new and he was very pleased with his work.

"Now it looks very nice." he said to himself. "I'll be able to sell it for a lot of money."

He took the letter to a shop in London where old papers of this kind were bought and sold.

"I want to sell this letter," Jack said to the shopkeeper. "It was written by a famous writer. You know about these things. How much will you give me for it?"

The shopkeeper looked at the letter for a long time.

"I'll give you two pounds for it. " he said at last.

"Only two pounds!" Jack said. "But people at least pay ten pounds for a letter like this. And just look! I've even cleaned it to make it look nice. "

"I can see that," said the shopkeeper."That's the trouble. People who buy old papers like them to be dirty!"

从前，一个叫杰克的人在顶层的一个房间里找到了一盒旧文件。他把大多数文件都烧了，因为他不太喜欢旧东西。但其中有一封年代已久的信。信的末尾是一个著名作家的签名。

“这个作家写这封信的时候，”杰克说，“还没人知道他。现在他可是个家喻户晓的人物了。有些人就喜欢买这样的信。如果我能把信卖给一个合适的人，我就发财了。”

但这封信上满是脏兮兮的痕迹。

“它可不怎么好看。”他想。“如果它脏兮兮的，不会有人想买它的。我得先把它弄干净。”

于是他拿了一块布，准备了一些水，清理起信来。他小心翼翼地，干得十分卖力。这封信终于焕然一新，杰克对自己的工作感到非常满意。

“现在好看了。”他自言自语道，“它能卖个好价钱。”

他带着信去了伦敦一家旧信交易店。

“我想卖这封信。”杰克对店主说，“它是一个著名的作家写的。你知道这类东西的价值，你会出多少钱啊？”

店主拿着信看了好一会儿。

“我出两英镑。”他终于报了价。

“只有两英镑！”杰克说。“可这样的信至少值十镑。你看看，我还把它清理得干干净净的，看上去多整洁啊。”

“看得出来，”店主说，“但这恰是问题所在。买陈年旧信的人就喜欢它们脏兮兮的。”
