This idiom comes from Records of Three Kingdoms・Kingdom of Wu・ Biography of Lu Meng. During the Three Kingdoms Period, there was a general in the State of Wu named Lu Meng styled himself Ziming. He was born in a poor family and studied very little since his youth. Later when he was in the military post, he only paid attention to the military training but still read few about military and historical books. So his educational level was very low, and some officials usually looked down upon him.

The King of the State of Wu, Sun Quan often urged him to study hard, but he always emphasized that he had no time to learn because of military affairs. Later the King told him repeatedly how he would benefit from learning, especially story about the Emperor Guanwu of the Han Dynasty who was very fond of reading some useful books even when occupied by military times. All of them made Lu Meng deeply moved. Since then he studied very hard.By and by, what he had learned exceeded others.

Once military adviser, Lu Su passed through Lu Meng's camp. Although originally Lu Su held him in contempt, Lu Su had to visit him out of politeness. Lu Meng warmly welcome him and also talked about his five suggestions about how to ally themselves with the general Guan Yu of the State of Shu. His best suggestions made Lu Su change his manner and said. "I usually consider that you are good at fighting without much learning ability.Now you are totally different from before, you have not only great learning but also good plans." Then Lu Meng said with smile: "When you meet a man after three days, you should look at him with new eyes." Since then they became intimate friends. Lu Su recommended Lu Meng to be the great general of the State of Wu.

Now we use it to describe that when you meet someone after a separation, you can't judge him by old standards.

此语出自《三国志・吴志・吕蒙传》。三国时期,吴国大将吕蒙,字子明,自幼出身贫寒,没有读过多少书。后来,他领兵打仗,只重视军事训练,很少阅读史学和军事书籍,因而文化水平不高,难免受到一些官员的轻视。

吴王孙权经常劝吕蒙要好好读书,可吕蒙总强调军务太多,忙不过来,没有时间读书。后来,孙权一再讲读书的好处,讲了自己读书的收益,也讲了汉光武帝在兵马忙乱之中也坚持学习的故事。吕蒙深受感动,从此认真学习,他读的书也超过了一般人。

一次,吴国军师鲁肃路过吕蒙营寨,鲁肃本来也不太瞧得起吕蒙,但为了礼节,也只得去拜访吕蒙。吕蒙热情地接待了他,并在和鲁肃的交谈中,对如何与蜀将关羽联合的事提出了五条计策。鲁肃听后改变了态度,对吕蒙亲切地说:“我一直认为你能武不能文,现在看来,你学识渊博,已不是以前的粗人了。”吕蒙笑着说:“士别三日,即更刮目相待。”从此,两人成了好友,后来鲁肃还推荐吕蒙继任大都督。

后用此典比喻在与人重逢时,不能用老眼光看人,应该用新的眼光另眼相待。
