The new Gulfstream G280 impresses in every aspect and is a far cry from its predecessor, the G200. While the two aircraft resemble one another, their airframes are both built by Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI), they are miles apart as far as design and performance are concerned. The G280 is in fact a brand new airplane and will be certified as such, first by Israel’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAAI), followed by the FAA in the U.S., EASA in Europe and China’s CAAC. As one might expect, Gulfstream’s people in China have already been working towards CAAC certification. That’s only the beginning, of course, and other countries will be added on a continuing basis. (For the record, the G200 which the G280 replaces, logged a total of 250 deliveries before production was halted in December 2011 to make room on the roster for the new entry, which is positioned between the smaller G150 and the larger G350. And there‘s plenty of room to move up the line all the way to the G650. If one has the motive and the means, naturally.)

And what are the features and advantages of the G280 over the G200 and what makes it such a strong competitor in the super-midsize category? We asked Heidi A. Fedak, Gulfstream’s Senior Manager, Social Media & External Communications, who had plenty of answers.

As Fedak explains, “Let’s start with the cabin, because that’s usually most important for the owner or operator. At nearly 26 feet, it’s much longer than that of the G200. And it’s a true stand-up cabin with a 6’ 3” height. A key cabin feature is that the large baggage compartment is accessible from the cabin.” Just in case a passenger left her copy of “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” inside her suitcase, for example. Or worse yet, the marketing plan which the boss would like to see right now, at 43,000 feet, no less. Yes, it’s a very handy feature, indeed.

According to Fedak, an HD entertainment system is standard, along with the Gulfstream-developed Cabin Management System. The latter allows a passenger to use his smart phone to control cabin lighting, temperature and entertainment equipment, to name a few. And there are three seating arrangements: Executive forward galley and double-club seating for eight, with flat reclining capability; Universal forward galley with club seating for four and a sofa; and a Hallmark forward galley with club seating for four and a separate conference seat arrangement for up to five passengers. When necessary, the G280 can carry up to ten passengers plus crew. But more typically it might carry four to six. After all, it’s a luxurious jet, not a bus.

Getting into some select facts and figures, Fedak points out that with its 3,600 nautical mile range, the G280 can fly between any two points in China, and beyond. And a fuel stop or two allows many more options, of course. “Our takeoff distance is less than 5,000 feet and the landing distance is 3,180 feet, so we should be able to operate in and out of London City Airport. Our G150 is certified for that and we’re looking to doing the same with the G280, as London City grows in popularity among business aircraft operators.”

The G280 is much more fuel efficient than the G200, credit due to the new fuel miserly Honeywell engines and advanced aerodynamics of the larger wing and the addition of performance-enhancing “winglets,” those cute little things on the wingtips that do so much for fuel efficiency and increased range. One might call them awesome.

Moving on to some more technical details, Fedak explains,“The G280 features the PlainView cockpit, which is based on the Rockwell Collins ProLine Fusion system. This includes the Gulfstream cursor control device which enables pilots to input data easily and provides instant display of information, including flight plan and routing changes.

The side-mounted cursor device is integrated with the cockpit, so it is redundant with the aircraft‘s conventional controls. It reduces pilot workload through interactive controls, menu selections and range/speed scrolling. It also offers moving map displays, graphic weather and many other features. Best of all, it will be able to meet the 1A requirements for future air navigation systems. Dual auto throttles are standard equipment, as is an auto-braking system, which adds to passenger comfort and even reduces brake wear.”

In addition to the considerable amount of standard features, Fedak lists a couple of key options. “For example, G280 will also have Gulfstream’s Head-Up Display and Enhanced Vision System (EVS) as an option. The EVS dramatically improves the pilot’s situational awareness during low visibility conditions and also allows the pilot to descend below the normal decision height, as long as the airport runway can be seen through the EVS. At 100 feet, the pilot must be able to see the runway without the aid of EVS.”Needless to say, but we’ll say it for emphasis, this is a great safety feature to add to your new G280, especially at a most critical point of any aircraft’s flight, landing, in addition to takeoff. The G280 also features a hot leading edge wing antiicing system as standard equipment, to maximize safety.

So when can we expect to see this magnificent machine certified and initial deliveries begin? Says Fedak, with more than a measure of confidence, “We are sticking to our original schedule, which calls for certification in the fourth quarter and first deliveries shortly thereafter.”

“The last step is avionics software loads coming from Rockwell Collins in short order, and once that’s done we’ll be in good shape to complete the certification process.” It appears to be a sure thing, so in astronaut language, it’s“All systems go!” for the new Gulfstream G280 which, by the way, requires an investment of $24 million USD. 除了以上这些标准功能,G280还可配备更多性能以供选择。“比如,湾流宇航的挡风玻璃显示装置和加强型视觉系统(EVS)等,都可选择配备。EVS系统能极大改善飞行员在低能见度飞行状态下的判断力,并能使飞机在低于标准飞行高度时紧急降落,前提是EVS能够观测到附近有机场跑道。而在100英尺这样的高度,飞行员不需要EVS也能看到地面上是否有机场跑道。”因此我们有必要强调这一性能,特别当飞机在起飞或降落的关键时段里,它能大大增强安全保障。此外,G280还能配备机翼抗冻性能,更进一步提升飞行安全。

这一型号何时能与买家见面?Fedak自信满满地回答:“一切按原计划顺利进行。今年第四季度获得认证,然后即可交付第一批G280。”

认证前的最后一步是Rockwell Collins负责安装航空电子系统软件,然后一应俱全。用一句航空术语来说,就是“所有系统正常”!这一售价2400万美元的G280即将袭来,您是否已经为之动容?

In a ceremony held at Embraer’s headquarters in Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil, Kong Lingjiang, Vice President of Xinjiang Guanghui Industry Investment Group, accepted delivery of the first Embraer ultra-large cabin executive jet to be operated in mainland China.

“We welcome the Xinjiang Guanghui Group to join Embraer’s increasing customer base in China,” said Guan Dongyuan, President of Embraer China. “We believe that our Lineage 1000, will prove to be the ideal ‘business partner’ for our new customer by increasing the productivity of its daily operations, while providing the ultimate in traveling comfort.”

As Kong Lingjiang agreed, “We’re confident that the Lineage 1000 will give us outstanding performance, providing our executives a ‘home away from home’, while maximizing the use of this aircraft as the true business tool we need to optimize our valuable time.” And, after all, time passed can never be replaced. “Time flies,” as the saying goes.

Since the first delivery of an Embraer executive jet in greater China in 2004, Embraer has gained firm orders for 28 executive jets in the region. Last year was especially impressive for Embraer in the Chinese market when it booked 15 firm orders, including an Embraer large-cabin Legacy 650 jet, delivered to Jackie Chan. Do we need to explain who he is? Not at all. He is known worldwide and now is Embraer Executive Jet’s roving brand ambassador for wherever his Legacy 650 can take him. Incidentally, his Legacy 650 is the first to be delivered in the Greater China region. Understandably, Embraer is feeling very confident these days and boldly predicts an industry-wide demand for some 635 executive jets in the Chinese market over the next ten years.

About the Lineage 1000: It has a range of 4,500 nautical miles, making it capable of flying nonstop from Beijing to Dubai or from Hong Kong to Sydney, for example. It features a highly advanced avionics suite as well as an electronic fly-by-wire control system, which basically means that the control surfaces are moved according to the pilot’s input to the computer system. The Lineage 1000 is all about creature comfort and is the only jet in its category providing up to 19 passengers with five distinct and spacious cabin zones. Like a flying luxury hotel, on-board amenities may include a queen-sized bed, stand-up shower and complete audio and entertainment systems. A walk-in baggage area, the largest

of all purpose-built business jets, is accessible from the main cabin throughout the flight. The options go on and on, but at Embraer it’s apparent that the customer’s every wish is their command, as the saying goes. All it takes is money and anything is possible.

As to the new Lineage 1000 owner, the Xinjiang Guanghui Industry Investment Group, founded in 1989, has businesses focused on energy development, car service and real estate development. The Group now lists total assets of $12 billion USD and some 50,000 employees. It is one of the Top 500 Chinese companies and ranks eighth among Chinese private companies. In 2011, the company had income of $1.27 billion USD, so certainly they can afford another Lineage 1000 or two. Or so Embraer’s Guan Dongyuan would hope.

Legacy 650 Embraer’s Strongest Seller In China

Ernie Edwards, President of Embraer Executive Jets, sees this year as a possible turning point in the recovery of market growth as the company’s new models move ahead on schedule to certification. The new super-midsize Legacy 500, which rolled out last December, is scheduled to make its first flight in September, with first deliveries starting in 2014. The Legacy 500 can carry up to 12 passengers plus crew, 3,000 nautical miles (nm), while the smaller Legacy 450 has a capacity of 8 passengers plus crew. The 450’s development schedule is about a year behind that of the Legacy 500, so first deliveries should begin in 2015, closely following certification by the CAAC. According to Edwards, Embraer’s large-cabin Legacy 650 “is selling very well” and is the company’s best seller in the region. Why is it vital? Here’s a true story: After a long, tiring flight in his Falcon 900 jet from England to South Africa, a wealthy industrialist who had a large game preserve in the Kalahari, made a final fuel stop at Johannesburg’s Lanseria Airport. The aircraft made the flight in record time, but he didn’t make it to the waiting ambulance; expiring on the runway just after exiting the plane.

The cause was more than his being stubborn. The crew had no training for a medical emergency. There was no medical equipment no defibrillator on the aircraft, save for a rudimentary first-aid kit. There was no way to accurately diagnose his true condition. There was no preparation for an emergency. Otherwise, chances are excellent that he could have survived.

Black Bag In An Emergency

Superior Aviation Moving Closer To Finalize Hawker Beechcraft Deal

北京卓越航空以蛇吞象,成功竞购豪客比奇

Hawker Beechcraft announced it was in “exclusive negotiations” with Superior Aviation Beijing Co. Ltd., as a strategic combination that would preserve jobs and product lines of both Beechcraft and Hawker products. Any agreement with Superior Aviation would be subject to approval by the Committee On Foreign Investment In The U.S. (CFIUS) and other regulatory agencies.

As Robert S. Miller, CEO of Hawker Beechcraft, Inc. explained: “The agreement we have reached with Superior Aviation provides us the funding to preserve jobs as we simultaneously negotiate a potential transaction with Superior. Most important, the combination will also mean more access to the fast-growing Chinese business and general aviation marketplace, which is forecast to grow more than ten percent a year over the next 10-15 years.”

Meanwhile, Superior Aviation has committed to making two deposit payments totaling $50 million USD within 30 days to sustain Hawker Beechcraft’s jet business. (The deal with Superior would not include Hawker Beechcraft Defense Company (HBDC) which will operate as a stand-alone organization, to continue production of its highly successful T-6 military trainer program and the certification process of its AT-6 light attack aircraft.)

Bombardier Stays On Track With New Learjets

Bombardier reports that its midsize, composite construction Learjet 85 is progressing towards is first flight, with four test aircraft now in various stages of construction. The Learjet 85 will carry up to ten passengers and crew to a range of 3,000 nm. The recently introduced Learjet 70 and Learjet 75, based on the Learjet 40XR and 45XR are also moving along on schedule and the first two flight test aircraft have already made over 135 flights. The Learjet 75 will carry up to nine passengers plus crew to a range of 2,050 nm, while the light Learjet 70 has a capacity of up to 7 passengers plus crew to a range of 1,725 nm.
