分号的主要用法

一般说来,分号的作用介于逗号和句号之间,即用分号隔开的两部分之间的关系,比用句号隔开的紧密,但不及用逗号分开的紧密。当两个主句没有任何连接词连接而出现在同一个句子中时,分号可起到替代连接词的作用。它常用于分隔没有连接词的句子,但一般不用在从句之间。简单地说,分号一般表示的是分句与分句之间的并列,主要用法有以下四点。

1.分隔没有连接词连接的独立分句。

In the past,boy babies were often dressed in blue;girls,in pink.

Our power to apprehend truth is limited;to seek it,limitless.

You don’t write because you want to say something;you write because you’ve got something to say.

2.分隔已有逗号的并列成分,以避免歧义。

Follow this procedure:first,get your application forms;next,fill them out;last,pay the charge.

While the man worked to strengthen the dam,the rain continued to fall;and the river,which was already above the usual level,rose higher and higher.

3.下列各词和短语若用于连接复合句时,常与分号连用:then,thus,hence,indeed,consequently,also,moreover,besides,furthermore,meanwhile,in other words,however,on the other hand,otherwise,instead,at the same time,in fact等。

Tom is well-liked;in fact,he is the most popular person in the class.

The weather was cold for that time of the year;nevertheless,we set out to hike to the top of that mountain.

According to one national survey,high school boys expected a starting salary of $2,000 for their first full-time job;on the other hand,high school girls expected a starting salary of only $1,500.

4.在群发电子邮件时,常用分号隔离不同的邮箱。
