picture book” could be basically defined as follows: in children’s literature, besides the common combination of pictures and stories such as comic books, ordinary illustrations and pictorial books, a new form of integrating pictures with stories is presented. I intend to produce something “unique”. Of these two, the “stories” are pure literary works of the Chinese language, and thus are definitely welcomed by youngsters; the “pictures” are elaborately hand- sketched pieces of art by our painters, illuminating thoroughly the quality feelings of the frames. In painting, the goal is to achieve the perfect fusion of national art and modern art; while in the creation of “picture books”, we strive to reach an organic blending of literariness, artistry and children’s characteristics. It is my wish to attract our kids’ attention to the pictures and for a longer period of time, changing their fast-food habit of skimming through pictures. What is more, I would like to lead and develop in children a fundamental aesthetic attitude and aesthetic ability for pictures.

The proposal of the concept “picture book” embodies a pursuit for a new breakthrough. It also represents my basic understanding of the quality of children’s literature: the works provided for our kids should not be those popular ones that are carelessly produced or extremely common; instead, they should be works of art, exquisite from the binding design to the textual content. This kind of works should radiate an elegant and pure artistic flavor. I think this shows the minimum respect of children’s literature publisher towards children’s personality and reflects the publisher’s responsible professional attitude when producing spiritual nourishment for our children. Of course, this contains my personal view of children and children’s literature as well.

The publication of children’s literature demands a great idea and establishment of “Made in China” consciousness. From original stories to book editing, from design to package, everything involved should show Chinese style, Chinese manner, and Chinese taste. The production of children’s books requires attentive work, unflagging efforts and longer period of time so that first-class books could be created. It is my belief that such a brand new publishing idea shall promote Chinese original children’s literary works of outstanding quality to the world.
