look at a leopard through a bamboo tube―have a limited view of something

This idiom comes from History of Jin・ Biography of Wang Xianzhi. Wang Xianzhi was the youngest son of the famous calligrapher, Wang Xizhi of the Eastern Jin Dynasty and he was a calligrapher, too. So they were honoured by people as "Two Wang".

Wang Xianzhi was very clever and capable since his youth. Once when he was talking with his elder brother Huizhi, suddenly, a fire disaster happened in the room, Huizhi was frightend out of his wits and went out immediately, but Xianzhi was still very calm. Another night, a thief sneaked into his bed room and stole a lot of things. When the thief was about to run away Xianzhi shouted loudly: "Pilfer! The blanket is too old to take out." The thief was frightened by the unexpected big voice and left all the things he stole on the ground and ran away at once.

Once, some of his father's students played gambling game together. Although Xianzhi was a child he could figure out who would win or lose, and he told one of them: "You are sure to lose." All of them were shocked and thought that such a young child could know other's success or failure, so they all praised him "Guan Zhong Kui Bao". It means that although you can't know the whole, you can understand the main part of them.

Originatly, this idiom means that one can see a main part of something but not the whole. Sometimes we use it to describe that one can infer the comprehensiveness from a small part of it.

此语出自《晋书,王献之传》。王献之,东晋著名书法家王羲之的小儿子,和他父亲一样,也是个著名的书法家。人们誉称他们为“二王”。

王献之幼年时就很聪明伶俐。有一次他和兄长徽之在屋中说话,突然发生火灾,徽之吓得慌忙往外跑,而献之却非常镇静。又有一天晚上,有个小偷潜入他的卧室偷东西,几乎偷了所有能拿走的东西。小偷刚要走,王献之却喝道:“小偷,那毯子是旧东西,留下吧!”小偷被突如其来的喝声吓得什么东西也没敢拿,赶快跑掉了。

又有一次,他父亲的几个学生在一起玩赌博游戏,当时只有几岁的王献之在一旁就看出了胜负,便对其中一方说:“你赢不了!”那些学生看他年纪那么小,却能看出胜负,就说这个小孩能“管中窥豹”,意思是你虽然不懂,可也能知道一些。

此典原意是只能看到局部,而看不到全面。有时也可比喻从看到的一部分中可以推测全部。
