ⅠTeaching objectives

By the end of session, most students will 1)review the key words&phrases and the ways to give advice2)know the gift giving customs better 3)make a plan for Children’s Day and write an article about it. These will be achieved by:

Brainstorming the words of gifts, pets and adjectives to review.

Asking and answering using target language.

Filling the blanks with the key phrases learned in this unit.

Discussing in groups and solving problems in a team.

ⅡLearning and teaching focus

Key words and phrases: calendar, photo album, scarf, mouse, snake, pig, hamster, personal, special, receive, choose, open, take an interest in, make progress, mention, encourage sb. to do sh.

Target language used by giving advice : Why don’t you +V..? Why not..? What /How about+Ving? and by making comments: That’s too personal./They’re not

special enough. That sounds good. She’ll like that.

Ⅲ Anticipated difficulties

Students may find it difficult to write. It will be solved by discussing in groups first and if necessary, give an article for example..

ⅣTeaching procedures

Step1.Free talk

T: Hello, everyone. I’m new for you. Are you interested in me? You can ask me some questions to know me more.

Ss may ask these questions: What’s your name? How old are you(a special day-date of birth)? Do you have any child? and so on. Then the teacher presents her personal information to share with the Ss.

(By free talk , the teacher review the words: take an interest in, special, personal, a seven-month-old child, and the students will know the teacher better. Also, lead in the main clue of the lesson: teacher’s son.)

Step2 Brainstorming and reviewing

T: December 25 is a special day to me because it’s my date of birth. October 12 is also special. Do you know why?

Ss: It ’s your son’s date of birth.

T: Yes. On that day, I became a mother. I think he is the best present I have ever received.

Ask students to focus on the word present and mention another word gift.

Ask Ss to brainstorm and think out as many gifts as they can.

If students mention some pets, ask What animals can be kept as pets nowadays?

Ask Ss to review pets they have learned in this unit Then ask several Ss to say out. While saying, the teacher ask: What do you think of keeping a pet hamster/pig…?at the right time.

(Review pets, the description words and phrases used by comparing qualities: too+adj.+to, easy to take care of, nice, not friendly enough, beautiful, short hair)

Step3 Practice

T: My son is the best gift for me. He is so lovely and friendly. What about you?What’s the best gift you have ever received? Why is it the best?

1)Show a sample and tell Ss they can express in the same way.

Sample:

The best gift I have ever received is a watch (what) from my parents (whom) on my tenth birthday (when). It’s special and nice. It tells me the importance of time.(why)

(Put what have reviewed into practice and review the target language: What’s the best gift you have received? at the same time. Students may recall good memory of receiving gifts and have an active attitude towards life.)

2)Show a letter written by a father and ask Ss fill the blanks with given words.(PPT)

Read the letter and answer the following questions.

1. Who is Haohao?

2. How did the father feel when he first saw his son?

3. Which makes the parents surprised?

4. What’s the best gift the father has ever received?

5. Which festival is mentioned in the letter?

(Put the key words and phrases: take an interest in, make progress, choose, open, special, receive into the text and have a reading practice.)

Step4 Pairwork

T: Children’s Day is coming. I want to get something for my son. But I don’t know what to buy. Could you please give me some advice?

Ask Ss talk in pairs then act the conversations out.

Reference sentences: Why don’t you+V…?

Give advice Why not +V…?

What/How about +Ving..?

That’s too expensive /personal…

That’s not creative/special enough.

Make comments That’s a good idea.

/That sounds good./He’ll like it.

(Review the target language in real situation)

Step5 Groupwork

T: Besides giving gifts, I also think about doing something else for Haohao.

What should I do for him? Discuss in group of four to fill in the chart.

Plan for Children’s Day

Step6 Write

Write a Children’s Day Plan for Haohao.

(Before writing, Ss have a discussion to prepare for the writing.)

If there is still some time left, share culture notes about gift giving.

Step7 Homework

1. Polish your article and e-mail it to the teacher.

2. Search for more information about gift giving on the internet.

3. Say “I love you” to father on Father’s Day.

(Know more about gift giving can open up Ss’ mind and let them say out what they feel aloud.)
