Irving was regarded as the first prose stylist of American romanticism in 19th century,his stories, essays, histories and biographies won him the international fame and he was acclaimed as"The father of american literature".

The Sketch Book, his best known collection, won him a measure of popularity at home and abroad, this book appeared the first modern American short stories and the first great American juvenile literature. In this book, he collected the fascinating wildness of his native country for his artistic material,his writings also made wide use of its legends and folktales. Among this collection, one of the most outstanding is“The Author’s Account of Himself’’, from this account, his unique character and pursuit to enjoy the sight of typical scenes impressed us deeply.

Irving was deeply influenced and proud of the incomparable natural scenery of American,so sublime and beautiful, he thought no other country had the charms of nature than those of his motherland. With deep feelings and romantic spirits, Irving was proud of his native land with enchanting beauty. With smooth and music rhythm, his simple diction had strongly influenced the readers, the boundless imaginative power never failed to bring them into a fascinating world.

Irving seemed to have different motivations for his travels, the charms of the nature motivated his early travels in his home country, and the quaint peculiarities of ancient and local custom prompted his later visits to Europe.His extensive travels in Europe broadened the scope of his observation and produced a certain breath of view; he was heavily influenced by European tradition and culture. By using his extensive terms and images, he gave his account romantic spirit. He longed to wander over the scenes of renowned achievements and yearned for the ancient civilization of Europe. Being conservation nature, Irving had fanatic even fascinated love for the antique, he found value in the past and in the traditions of the old world where he could find its way into his articles with picturesqueness, ruins and objects of antiquity. His languages were expressed so elegant and his narrative flowed so smoothly, the readers would always find it a delightful experience to read and could not refrain from being fascinated with him; they were often charmed by its description of a remote world, a world of legends, fantasies and primitive beauty.

Irving was a man of personal charm, never married. Many of his works reflected his personal charm. His literary style matched his personality perfectly. As a writer, his style was formed upon such English models as Swift and Addison Goldsmith, but distinctly his own. He perfected the best classic style that American literature ever produced, his essays were regarded as models of perfect English throughout the 19th century.
