合作原则视角下外贸英语信函写作的语言语用特点及翻译技巧

外贸英语信函是外贸业务中外销业务员主要的对外书面沟通方式,在实际业务工作中外贸业务员不仅需要写好信函,还需要懂得翻译收到的信函。因此,如何在符合合作原则的情况下正确拟写和翻译信函是外贸业务员成功有效地进行对外沟通需要具备的两大语言技能。本文以合作原则为视角,分析外贸英语信函写作的语言语用特点,探讨外贸英语信函翻译的技巧。

一、合作原则

Grice是牛津日常语言哲学学派的代表人物,1975年发表了题为“逻辑与会话”的论文,该论文中讨论了会话含义理论的核心部分――合作原则(Cooperative Principle),简称CP。合作原则是指在你参与的谈话中,整个交谈过程里你所说的话语应该符合你所参与的这次谈话的目标和方向。为了进一步说明合作原则,Grice套用德国哲学家康德的四个哲学范畴体系,把合作原则具体化为四个准则:一是数量准则(quantity maxim),指你的话语要如所要求的那样详尽,你的话语不能比所要求的更详细。二是质量准则(quality maxim),指不说自己认为是不真实的话语,不说自己缺乏足够证据的话语。三是关系准则(relation maxim),指所说的话要相关。四是方式准则(manner maxim),指避免表达含糊,避免歧义,说话要简要,避免不必要的赘述,说话要有条理。

外贸英语信函撰写人如果能以合作原则来指导写作和翻译,那么与国外客户的书面交流磋商就会变得更高效顺畅。

二、外贸英语信函写作的语言语用特点

合作原则视角下,外贸英语信函写作在语言语用方面呈现以下几个特点。

(一)内容完整,符合数量准则

内容完整指信函须包括所有必需的信息,回信时也须答复来信所提出的全部问题和要求,否则不仅会增加信函往来次数,还会减缓外贸业务的推进。例如建立业务关系信函:

We have been leading importers of casual shoes for many years. At present, we are interested in extending our range and would appreciate your catalogues and quotations.

If your prices are competitive we would like to place a trial order with you.

We look forward to your early reply.

上述建立业务关系信函的文体格式包括了信头、日期、封内名称和地址、称呼、正文、结尾敬语和签名8个基本部分,正文内容包含了信息来源、写信目的、自我介绍、劝说语和表达期待的结束语,格式内容完整,把相关的信息一次性完整地传递给了对方,体现了数量准则。

(二)语言准确具体,符合质量准则

语言准确具体指在写外贸英语信函时,不仅要做到语法正确和拼写无误,还要传递具体的信息。

1.正确。如:We are sending you a check for US$ 50,450.例中语句规范、符合语法。

2.具体。试比较以下句子。句1:You are kindly requested to ship the goods to us soon.句2:Please ship the goods to us not later than October 15.句2中的“not later than October 15”比句1中的“soon”具体,使得整个句子所表达的意思做到了言之有物,不笼统,体现了质量准则。

(三)语篇围绕主题,符合关系准则

语篇围绕主题指来往信函内容紧扣业务话题,遣词造句、行文用语、结构布局与相关业务环节相吻合。如修改函:

Dear Sirs,

Re: Amendment to Discrepancies

We refer to 30 metric tons of rice and 20 metric tons of soy beans under our S/C No.

354 and regret that there are several points in the L/C not in conformity with what are stipulated in the contract, therefore, we would like you to amend the L/C as follows:

1)The amount of your L/C is insufficient. The total amount is USD$125,000 instead of US$120,000.

2)Transshipment and partial shipment are allowed.

3)The validity of L/C is 20 days after shipment.

We shall highly appreciate it if you pay prompt attention to this matter and give us response at the earliest convenience.

Yours faithfully,

上例中,事由部分直接点题,正文内容紧扣修改信用证主题,点明哪些内容与所签署的合同不一致,要求对方按合同修改信用证,内容紧密衔接,层层递进,体现了关系准则。

(四)语言清楚、简洁、体谅和礼貌,符合方式准则

1.清楚。清楚指保证所拟写的信函意思清楚明了,不产生误解。试比较以下句子。原句:As to the steamers sailing from Hong Kong to San Francisco, we have bimonthly direct services.改句:We have two direct sailings every month from Hong Kong to San Francisco.

2.简洁。简洁指用最少的语言表达最丰富完整的内容,且不影响信函的正确性。试比较以下句子。唆:It has come to our attention that your account is two months in arrears.简洁:Your account is two months in arrears.

3.体谅。体谅指以对方利益为出发点,语言尽量体现以对方为主的态度。试比较以下句子。不体谅:I want to have your confirmation on this point quickly.体谅:Your confirmation on this point would be appreciated.

4.礼貌。礼貌指语言表达客气,有分寸,友好、委婉。试比较以下句子。不礼貌:Your Order No. 85 for l00, 000 yards of Cotton Prints Art. No. 1002 is rejected.礼貌:We regret to inform you that we have been unable to accept your Order No.85 for 100,000 yards of Cotton Prints Art. No.1002.

三、外贸英语信函翻译技巧

根据合作原则视角下外贸英语信函在语言上所呈现的语用特点,其翻译应尽量正确、通顺和统一,以体现公函性、忠实性、行业性、礼节性、灵活性和通顺性。

(一)文体格式意译,体现公函化

在翻译信函文体格式内容时采用意译体现公函性。

1.称呼。信函称呼常用“Dear Sirs,和Gentlemen:”表示,翻译时须考虑汉语公函的表达习惯,不要翻译成“亲爱的先生们”,而应译为“敬启者”。

2.参考案号。信函参考案号用“Our ref.”和“Your ref.”来表示,应译为“我方编号”和“你方编号”。

3.送交。信函送交部分用“Attention:…”来表示,应译为“由……亲启”。

4.标题。信函标题部分用“Re:…”来表达,应译为“事由:……”。

5.附录。信函附录部分用“Enclosure:…”来表示,应译为“附件:……”。

6.抄送。信函抄送部分用“c.c.….”表示,应译为“副本抄送给:……”。

7.结尾敬语。信函结尾敬语部分用“Yours truly, yours sincerely, Yours faithfully,”表示,翻译时不可照字面直接翻译成“忠实的”,应译为“谨上或敬上”。

(二)专业表达对等译,体现业务化

外贸英语信函中的专业表达对等译,体现业务性。

1.业务环节语。业务环节语如“establish business relations”可译为“建立业务关系”;“enquiry”可译为“询盘”;“offer”可译为“报盘”;“counter-offer”可译为“还盘”;“contract”可译为“合同”;“payment terms”可译为“支付条款”;“shipment terms”可译为“装运条款”;“insurance terms”可译为“保险条款”,“complaints and claims”可译为“申述与索赔”。

2.专业术语。可将“irrevocable L/C”翻译为“不可撤销信用证”;“L/C with T/T reimbursement clause”译为“带电汇条款信用证”;“without recourse L/C/with recourse L/C”译为“无追索权信用证/有追索权信用证”; “commercial invoice”译为“商业发票”;“packing list”译为“装箱单”;“insurance policy”译为“保单”;“shipping advice”译为“装船通知”;“shipping documents”译为“装运单据”;“sight draft”译为“即期汇票”,“quality inspection certificate ”译为“品质检验证书”。

3.缩略语。可将“B/L”译为“海运提单”;“C/O”译为“产地证”;“CIF”译为“成本,保险加海运费”;“CY/CY”译为“整柜交货(起点/终点)”;“D/A”译为“承兑交单”;“D/P”译为“付款交单”;“DDP”译为“完税后交货”;“Ex”译为“工厂交货”;“FOB”译为“船上交货”;“S/O”译为“装货指示书”,“W/T”译为“重量吨”。

(三)典型句式套译,体现忠实化

1.开头套句。例如:We own your name and address to FORT & Willian Co.,Ltd.We are indented to Fort & Willian Co.,Ltd.for your name and address. We have obtained your name and address from Fort & Williams Co.,Ltd.以上都是建立业务关系信函的开头句,可套译为:“我们获悉贵公司的名称和地址要感谢FORT & Williams有限责任公司。”又如:We have received your letter of the 20th April,2012.We are in receipt of your letter of the 20th April,2012.We acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 20th April,2012.以上3句都是回信开头语,可统一译为:“我方已经收到你方2012年4月20号来信。”

2.结尾套句。例如:We are looking forward to receiving your favorable reply.We are expecting your favorable reply.We are waiting for your favorable reply. 以上3句都是信函结尾用语,可共同译为:“我们盼望收到你方的友好回复。”

3.感谢套句。例如:It would be appreciated if you can send us an early reply. We shall be obliged if you can send us your early reply.We shall be grateful if you can send us your early reply.以上感谢句可划一译为:“如蒙贵方早日回复,我方将不胜感激。”

4.要求套语。例如:Would you kindly fax us an illustrated catalogue?You are kindly requested to fax us an illustrated catalogue.以上提出要求的典型句式可以归纳译为:“请传真一份有插图的目录”。

5.客套用语。例如:We are glad to inform you that the goods have arrived at the destination in good condition.We have the pleasure to inform you that the goods have arrived at the destination in good condition.以上客套用语可以套译为“我方高兴地告知货物已经抵达目的地,状况良好。/货物今日业已到达目的港,特此奉告。”

6.拒绝套句。例如:We regret to be unable to conclude the business with you. We are regrettable that we can not conclude the business with you. It is regretful that we are not able to conclude the business with you. 以上3句拒绝语可套译为:“很遗憾我方难与贵方达成交易。”

7.邮寄套语。例如:We enclose our Sales confirmation No. 850 in duplicate.We are sending you under cover our Sales confirmation No. 850 in duplicate.Enclosed you will find our Sales Contract No No. 850 in duplicate.以上邮寄语可统一翻译为:“现随函附上我方850号销售确认书一式两份。”

(四)业务句式直译,体现行业化

外贸英语信函与进出口业务环节紧密相扣,为了很好地传递业务信息,对于业务句可采用直译法。例如:We are offering you 30 metric tons of polished rice at US4 2,400 per metric ton for July shipment.译为:兹报30公吨大米,每公吨2,400公吨,7月装运。又如:We would you to amend the L/C No. 123 to allow transshipment via Hong Kong.译为:请修改123号信用证允许在香港转船。再如:Insurance shall be covered against All Risks on 100 metric tons of wool for 110% of the invoice value.译为:按照发票金额的110%,对100公吨的羊毛投保一切险。

(五)磋商句式婉译,体现礼节化

磋商句式采用婉译的方式,以体现礼节化。例如:Although we are keen to do business with you, we regret that we cannot accept your counter-offer or even meet you half way.译为:尽管我方渴望与贵方做交易,然而抱歉我方无法接受你方的还盘,甚至是各让一半。又如:Much to our great disappointment, we find that the goods are not of the quality we ordered.译为:令我们十分遗憾的是,我方发现货物不具备我方订购品质。

(六)模糊语句对应译,体现圆通化

模糊语句采用对应译的方式,以体现圆通化。例如:It is found that your price is on the high side.译为:我们认为你方价格偏高。又如:To accept the prices you quote would leave us with only a small profit on our sales.译为:接受你方报价将使我方无利可图。

(七)复杂句转译,体现通顺化

复杂句采用转译的方式,以体现通顺化。例如:I have the honor to notify you that we have commenced a business as commission agents for British goods.这句话的原译是:我很荣幸地告知你我们已经开始了一项业务,来作为英国货物的。转译:我们已经开始了经营代销英国货物的业务,特此通告。

综上所述,只有遵循语用合作原则,掌握外贸英语信函写作的语言语用特点和翻译技巧,撰写出的外贸英语信函才易于被对方接受,翻译出的信函才好被客户理解,最终促进双方交易更有效地进行。
