America is the melting pot of the world and Hollywood, unsurprisingly, is the melting pot of the entertainment world. Ever since the silent period non-American actors have graced the silver screen. After the First World War the floodgates opened to the throngs of foreign wannabe stars dreaming of a slice of what Tinsel Town had to offer. Samuel Goldwyn and a handful of other foreign studio heads set the stage for the industry's internationalism. Despite being accused of Amero-centric provincialism, Hollywood has always employed a host of foreign born actors and actresses, from Greta Garbo to Nicole Kidman, and Charlie Chaplin to Mel Gibson. Today, a large percentage of the faces we see in Hollywood productions are not American. Insight Entertainment takes a look at four.

Catherine Zeta-Jones

Catherine was born in Wales in 1969. Although her family had no connection to show business she was attracted to the stage at a young age. She appeared in numerous musicals until her big break came when she was 15. She was cast as the second understudy for the lead role in a musical called 42nd Street. One night that the musical was being staged the lead actress and the first understudy both fell ill and Catherine had to take over. It so happened that the play's producer was in the audience that night and was so impressed with her performance that he gave her the lead role for the rest of the production. She first became well known with the British public after her performance in the television series The Darling Buds of May in 1991. She subsequently secured supporting roles in Hollywood movies until her breakthrough role as the fiery Elena in The Mask of Zorro in 1998. With her sultry good-looks and star quality she has become one of the most bankable (and gossiped about) leading ladies in Hollywood.

Colin Farrell科林・法瑞尔

Born in Ireland in 1976, Farrell was known for his loud mouth and quick temper before he finished primary school. At 17, he gave up his dream in following in his father's footsteps and becoming a football player (the discipline involved in training didn't agree with him) and took off to Australia to fool around with his friends for one year. When he returned he attended acting school, dropped out and started to enjoy modest success in Dublin's theatre circuit. He was spotted by American actor Kevin Spacey who recommended him for a role in Ordinary Decent Criminals (2000). From this role he hooked up with an American agent. His first major American role was in Tigerland and despite the film's poor showing at the box office he was an instant hit with critics and studio execs. His rise to the top in Hollywood was lightning-fast and by 2003 he was co-starring in The Recruit with Al Pacino. Part of his success is owed to the fact that he filled a Hollywood vacuum: the lack of a fast-talking, foul-mouthed, beer-guzzling rebel in the high ranks of the business. His total disregard for what is considered proper just makes him that bit cooler.

"The Spanish Enchantress" was born in Madrid in 1974 to a family that encouraged their children to study the Arts. She trained as a ballerina until the age of 15 when she won a talent competition which landed her a few TV roles. From there she conquered the cinema of her homeland and two films in particular; Belle Epoque (1992) and All About My Mother (1999) brought her international recognition. The latter picture won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film, and Penelope's performance in it as a pregnant nun stood out with American audiences. By 2001, a year in which she appeared in Blow and Vanilla Sky, she had become a Hollywood star. Gorgeous and gifted, she has an uncanny knack at shrugging off tabloid speculation about her co-star boyfriends and focusing on her career. It is this quality (not to mention her sexy Spanish accent) that will propel her to the top of her game.

Russell Crowe罗素・克洛

The straight-talking (or grunting as the case often is) leading actor was born in Wellington in 1964 and grew up in Australia. At a young age he appeared in a series of extra roles but by 16 had lost interest in the big screen and wanted to become a rock musician. He continued to act to pay his bills. He starred in his first feature Prisoners of the Sun in 1989 but his big break came with his performance in the Australian hit Proof in 1991. Sharon Stone spotted him in the role of a Neo-Nazi skinhead in Romper Stomper (1993) and recommended him for The Quick and the Dead. This was Crowe's first part in an American movie and, although it died quickly (pardon the pun!) at the box office, it got him the recognition he needed, eventually leading to his role in Gladiator which earned him an Oscar for Best Actor in 2001. His outbursts at reporters have earned him a reputation as a hell-raiser but Crowe mostly tends to avoid the media and let his acting speak for him. He's a man's man; smart, aggressive and talented. What you see is what you get!
