Learning a foreign language involves a lot of hard work. It can be made easier by employing useful and efficient study strategies. This especially applies to learning new vocabulary.

Learning vocabulary can be tricky. A lot of students will find that their progress in acquiring English vocabulary is very uneven. It is important to point out that being able to get a high score in a multiple choice question English test is no indication that one has a good command of vocabulary. Having a good command of vocabulary means being able to accurately use a wide range of words in different situations.

Cramming is definitely not a good way to learn vocabulary. Students might be tempted to try and learn twenty English words a day. What will happen is that they will end up forgetting most of what they learned and only have a tentative grasp of a few words. Don't overload your memory. Trying to do too much at once is counterproductive. Choose a few English words and allow time to develop a thorough grasp of their meanings and usages. In learning vocabulary, less is more.a

Some students also believe that when they meet a new English word all they have to do is find its Chinese equivalent and memorize it. English cannot be translated directly into Chinese and vice versa. Words have different layers of meaning and are appropriate in certain contexts. It is usually impossible to find a word in another language that will translate all its layers of meaning and that can be used in all the same contexts.

When you listen to native speakers and read original materials pay close attention to how the word is used. Pick out some example sentences which show the word in its different contexts. This will give you a better understanding of the word and how to use it accurately.

Most students, when learning new words, will have to write them down. The way in which new vocabulary is written down is very important. Some students will keep a vocabulary book and will enter new words in alphabetical order or in no order at all. This is not a very useful way of recording new vocabulary as it can be difficult to find the new words again and, more important, learners do not usually remember the contents of a list if the words are not associated with one another in some way.

If you record words in lists, it is much more useful to record them according to the subject, for example, taking one important word like "Traffic", and writing down a number of words that are often used with it. For example:

Traffic Jam

Traffic Light

Traffic Circle

Drug Traffic

It is also useful to list words associated with a certain area. For example:

School

Teacher

Student

Classroom

Blackboard

当你聆听本族语使用者讲话或阅读原文材料时,要密切关注单词的用法。找出一些在不同语境下使用同一单词的例句。这会使你更好地理解该词并准确地使用它。

大部分学生在学习新单词时,必须要进行单词抄写。这种抄写单词的方法很重要。有些学生会常备一个词汇本,把新单词按照字母顺序或毫无顺序地记下来。这并不是一种非常实用的生词记忆法,因为再把这些新单词找出来可能就并非易事了,更重要的是,如果单词不能以某种方式彼此相联,学习者通常是记不住罗列成单的单词的。

如果你是以列表的形式来记单词,那么按照主题记单词就再有用不过了,举例来说,找一个重要的单词,如“Traffic”,然后列出经常与其搭配的许多词。例如:
