在初三英语课本中，if和whether是两个较常用的从属连词，现将它们的用法特点阐述如下。
一、两者通用的情况
在宾语从句中，if和whether都可用来引导没有疑问词但有疑问含义的句子，可译为“是否”、“是不是”。if多用于口语和非正式文体中，whether则多用于比较正式的文体中。例如：
Do you know if / whether he will come tomorrow?
你知道他明天是否回来吗？
He asked me if / whether I liked English.
他问我是否喜欢英语。
I don’t know if / whether it’s going to rain tomorrow.
我不知道明天是否会下雨。
Go and see if / whether he is free.
去看看他是否有空。
I wonder if / whether it’s large enough.
我想知道这个是否足够大。
二、用if不用whether的情况
1. 在条件状语从句中，if表示“如果”，这时不能用whether代替。例如：
They will go to visit the Great Wall if they are free tomorrow.
如果明天有空，他们将去参观长城。
If it’s fine tomorrow, I will take you to the park.
如果明天天气晴朗，我就带你去公园。
2. 在宾语从句中，如果谓语动词是由语法形式构成的否定式，则只能用if，不能用whether。例如：
Granny asked if the little boy hadn’t broken the glass of hers.
奶奶问是不是那个小男孩并没有打碎她的玻璃杯。
3. 状语从句中的even if（意为“即使”）和as if（意为“好像”）中的if不能用whether代替。例如：
I will not let you watch TV even if you’re free.
即使你有空，我也不让你看电视。
He talks as if he knew all about it.
他说话的口气好像他全都知道了。
三、用whether不用if的情况
1. 在宾语从句中，直接与or not构成一个词组时，只能用whether。但如果or not位于句尾，也可以用if代替whether。例如：
Could you tell me whether or not I can stay here with you?
你能告诉我是否我可以和你们呆在一起吗？
He wondered whether or not she would come.
他想知道她是否会来。
The cat saw the parrot and wanted to know whether / if it was a bird or not.
猫看见了鹦鹉，想知道它是不是一只鸟。
2. 在表示“是否”且与动词不定式连用时，只能用whether。例如：
He can’t decide whether to buy that car.
他不能决定是否买那辆车。
She hasn’t decided whether to sail or fly to America.
她还没决定是乘船去美国还是乘飞机去。
3. 在介词后的宾语从句中，用whether不用if。例如：
I’mthinkingofwhetherweshouldgo fishing.
我正在考虑我们是不是该去钓鱼。
I worry about whether I hurt her feeling.
我担心自己是否伤害了她的感情。
We settled the question of whether we’ll go back home.
关于我们是否回家的问题已经解决了。
4. 在动词discuss（意为“讨论”）后的宾语从句中，用whether不用if。例如：
We discussed whether we should close the shop.
我们讨论是不是该关了那家商店。
We discussed whether we had a sports meeting next week.
我们讨论下周是否举行运动会。
5. 宾语从句提前时，只能用whether。例如：
Whether this is true or not, I can’t say.
这是不是真的，我说不准。
6. 引导位于句首的主语从句或表语从句时，要用whether。例如：
Whether he is right or wrong is a question.
他是对是错仍是个问题。
Whether he comes or not doesn’t concern me.
他来不来与我无关。
7.用if可能产生歧义时，只能用whether。例如：
Tell me if you want the book.
该句可以有两种解释：
①假如你需要这本书，请告诉我。（if意为“如果”）
②请告诉我你是否想要这本书。（if意为“是否”）
句中的if若换作whether，则只能作第二种解释。即：
Tell me whether you want the book.
请告诉我你是否想要这本书。
