His brown skin, dark hair and handsome features told me this was her father. 31 of Mary Lou’s proud spirit, he remained 32 and watched the lonely girl walk toward him. Only his 33 ―shining with both grief and pride―followed. As I passed, he looked at me® 34 with burning tears that spoke to my shame. He didn’t speak a word.

请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题纸(卡)上将该项涂黑。

A

John has been among the beneficiaries of the family strengthening programme in Rwanda since 2005. He is the representative of all the young people who receive assistance from the programme. Like all the other beneficiaries, he receives a monthly package of food, containing beans, rice, corn flour, sorghum, fish, oil, salt, sugar and boxes of milk. In January 2006, he was given a small start-up grant for an income-generating activity. He sells various foodstuffs in a market not very far from SOS Children’s Village Kigali. John is proud of this activity and he enjoys having a business.

A painful past

John had an active life: a job, a salary and many friends. One day, all this disappeared because he found out that he was HIV-positive.

“After finding out about my situation, it was not easy at all. When I was told that I was HIV-positive, I thought it was a joke, I didn’t believe it. I spent several weeks feeling sorry for myself, asking myself what happened to me. I cried a lot. I didn’t want to accept that I was infected. I could not imagine that I would stay alive for more than a week,” John recalled.

“When the news of my illness reached my office, I was dismissed outright. I found myself alone without friends or a job, and I realized that there was a problem. I began to accept the hard reality that it was necessary to fight to survive. I had no money, no savings and could not imagine that I would overcome this situation.”

John’s girlfriend left him, and he found himself alone with a six-month-old baby. “It was even more difficult as I did not know how to take care of a baby,” John remembers. “I did not know how to calm her cries during the night. I used to walk with my baby all day long to find something to eat… but this was not easy because I couldn’t walk every day due to my illness.”

A new life full of projects

Thanks to the support of the SOS Children’s Villages family strengthening programme, John is feeling much better. The programme provides John with antiretroviral(ARV) medications, and he visits the hospital regularly for check-ups. His daughter also receives assistance. John feels better and better and has made several ambitious plans for the future. “One of my first projects is to enlarge my business by buying more goods. I would like to open a boutique(小商店) in a more popular place,” he said, smiling. “I would also like to get married, but I don’t know if it will be easy. All in all, I keep my fingers crossed!”

36. Where does John receive help according to the first paragraph?

A.From a lot of young people.

B.From a food market.

C.From SOS Children’s Village

D.From a business

37. How does John feel when told he was HIV-positive?

A.He found it hard to accept the fact.

B.He was brave enough to overcome the situation.

C.He cried hard for several months.

D.He was too weak to take any walk.

38. What does the last sentence mean?

A.I will save a lot of money with my own hands.

B.I will pray for a good wife.

C.I hope things will turn out well.

D.I wish my fingers to be flexible.

Have you ever picked a job based on the fact that you were good at it but later found it made you feel very uncomfortable over time? When you select your career, there’s a whole lot more to it than assessing your skills and matching them with a particular position. If you ignore your personality, it will hurt you long-term regardless of your skills or the job’s pay. There are several areas of your personality that you need to consider to help you find a good job. Here are a few of those main areas:

1) Do you prefer working alone or with other people?

There are isolating(使孤立) jobs that will drive an outgoing person crazy and also interactive jobs that will make a shy person uneasy. Most people are not extremes in either direction but do have a tendency that they prefer. There are also positions that are sometimes a combination of the two, which may be best for someone in the middle who adapts easily to either situation.

2) How do you handle change?

Most jobs these days have some elements of change to them, but some are more than others. If you need stability in your life, you may need a job where the changes don’t happen so often. Other people would be bored of the same daily routine.

3) Do you enjoy working with computers?

I do see this as a kind of personality characteristic. There are people who are happy to spend more than 40 hours a week on a computer, while there are others who need a lot of human interaction throughout the day. Again, these are extremes and you’ll likely find a lot of positions somewhere in the middle as well.

4) What type of work environment do you enjoy?

This can range from being in a large building with a lot of people you won’t know immediately to a smaller setting where you’ll get to know almost all the people there fairly quickly.

5) How do you like to get paid?

Some people are motivated by the pay they get, while others feel too stressed to be like that. The variety of payment designs in the sales industry is a typical example for this.

Anyway, these are a great starting point for you. I’ve seen it over and over again with people that they make more money over time when they do something they love. It may take you a little longer, but making a move to do what you have a passion for can change the course of your life for the better.

39. What is unnecessary in your job hunting?

A.Assessing your skills.

B.Going to different areas.

C.Matching your skills with a position.

D.taking your personality into consideration.

40. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Isolating jobs usually drive people mad.

B.Interactive jobs make people shy easily.

C.Extreme people tend to work with others.

D.Almost everyone has a tendency in jobs.

41. What is the missing word about a job search in the following chart?

A.Design.

B.Changes.

C.Cooperation.

D.Hobbies.

42. What is the best title for this passage?

A.Lifestyles and Job Pay

B.Jobs and Environment

C.Job Skills and Abilities

D.Personalities and Jobs

C

FOR this column I decided to try a simple experiment―ask a dozen friends if they would like more money.

After receiving a predictably unanimous(意见一致的) “Yes!”, there followed the more challenging question. Would having a more padded bank account make them a better person? Each friend had their own ideas but most seemed to think that being poor was more likely to make someone a “worse” person.

So what do the experts think? Sociologists at the University of Minnesota conducted a series of experiments with two groups of people. One group was persuaded to think of money by completing word puzzles about wealth, using a computer screensaver showing piles of cash and other subtle(精巧的) means. The second group, the “control” group, was not made to think about money(at least, no more than usual).

Then the real experiments began. Participants had to talk to and help each other in various tasks. Those in the money group spent less time helping others, took longer to ask for help if they needed it and even put their chairs further away when talking to others.

With the tasks completed, participants were asked if they would like to donate some of their payment for the day’s work. Those in the money group gave less, showing you don’t have to be rich to be a miser(吝啬鬼)―just thinking about money can tighten up the purse strings.

So why does money make us less likely to help each other? Sociologists suggest that as we start to use money, the need to rely on family and friends lessens. Thus we all become more self-sufficient. I don’t know about you, but all this leads me to reflect on modern Chinese society.

The Chinese are well-known for their tight-knit families. Children often live with their parents until they marry and grandparents are more likely to stay with the family instead of in an old person’s home. Under the one-child policy, cousins step in to become “brothers” and “sisters” to the young.

Now everyone’s busy getting rich, and those in the emerging middle-class are sensibly investing in insurance and pensions to look after themselves when they get old. Inevitably(不可避免地), the strong social ties that exist within China will loosen. The friendly street chatter and the clatter of chess pieces will die down as people stay indoors with the television, financially secure but distant from their neighbors.

I can’t help but feel that once the community spirit is lost there’s no amount of money that can buy it back. But the headlong rush to wealth and individualism will continue and only when it’s too late will people look back and realize what they’ve lost.

43. Why do the persons in the emerging middle-class spend their money in insurance and pensions?

A.Because they don’t want to look after themselves when they are old.

B.Because they want to depend on themselves when they get old.

C.Because they have so much money that they can’t spend it elsewhere.

D.Because they want to leave it to their children.

44. What can we infer from this passage?

A.The people are becoming richer, while the relationship between them is getting worse.

B.The richer the people are, the more readily they will help others.

C.People often envy those who have more money, so they can’t get on well with each other.

D.People with little money treat others badly, just because they are too poor.

45. In which country is the situation probably talked about in this passage?

A.America.

B.Canada.

C.China.

D.England.

46. The best title for this passage would be______.

A.Will the experiment be successful?

B.Will money buy back the community spirit?

C.Will you like to help others?

D.Will money make you a better person?

Dior was born in Normandy in 1905, and his family’s original plans for him included a career in the diplomatic service, but by the time he was twenty-three, with his parents’ money, he opened a small art gallery in Paris. By 1931, the money had been used up. Dior’s friends in the art gallery asked him to draw and he took his first step at designing and drawing. His first job was with Lucien Lelong from whom Dior learned his craft(手艺).

In February, 1947, Dior started the New Look in his first major Paris collection. He was backed by a famous textile producer, Boussac, who looked after the dollars, while Dior looked after the fashions. Dior knew nothing about cutting and sewing, but he was good at fashion design.

The New Look started an entirely different look to costume, with a tiny waist, a rounded shoulder and a shapely bust(胸围), usually with a low-cut neckline and a long, full skirt. To women who had lived through the war years, the femaleness of the New look was a great success, for people were tired of tile extremely plain, wartime restrictive fashions.

It is said that dresses by Dior were “constructed like buildings,” but young people were attracted to his design, and all over the western world, manufacturers plunged(投入) into the production of his new style. Dior’s revolutionary designs lighted up a whole cycle of fashion, rounded, gentle, feminine, a delight in elegance. A New Look House of Dior opened in 1948, followed by one in London. Considered as King of Couture(women’s clothing) for years, the Dior empire grew until it covered every country in the western world, and included furs, hosiery, jewelry, perfumes, men’s wear and on and on. More than 1,000 people worked at the Paris headquarters then.

His sudden death in 1957 when he was 54 years old did not stop the growth of the House of Dior. Even now, so many years after his death, his name is closely connected with fashion throughout the world, and indeed is one of the most recognized names in the world. His first, great New Look, with its long skirts was an expression of freedom in the late 1940s.

47. Which of the following designs is close to Dior’s?

48. According to the passage, in Dior’s life, he did NOT______.

A.make creative fashion designs

B.work in a diplomatic service

C.learn craft as his first job

D.open a New Look House

49. We can infer from the passage that______.

A.Dior and his supporter had different interests in business

B.Dior’s New Look had little influence on people then

C.Dior is only a brand of women’s fashion

D.Dior’s fashion was not accepted at first

50. What is probably the best title for the passage?______.

A.The History of the New Look

B.The Growth of the Dior Empire

C.An Expression of Freedom―Dior

D.The Founder of the New Look―Dior

Everyone has periods in their lives when everything seems very hard, when there’s nobody to talk to and the mood is just getting worse and worse. But why sit and think how pathetic you are? There are some things that may help you lift up your mood. If it fails you, at least while doing these things you won’t have time to think of your problems. You win anyway!

The first thing you should try is socializing and thinking positively. It’s very hard, because usually when we feel depressed we lock ourselves at home and try to think about all the bad character issues we have. But if you’ll try to force yourself and call a friend for a cup of coffee, the chances for changing your mood into better are very good. Just try to avoid bad thoughts. Instead, try to think only about the bright side of your life. Don’t forget: We are what we think we are.

You should also try doing something only for yourself, something totally selfish. This could be something you wanted for a long time: maybe a short trip, a coat, a ring or anything that could lift up your mood. This doesn’t have to be costly. The point of all this is being good to yourself. Besides giving presents to yourself, buying things to others may be a perfect way to feel happy. Think of your friends, family, relatives or even local charities, choose one person and give him a gift. Making another person feel happy will make you feel good in your heart and mind.

Try to concentrate on the present and future to make your life better in every possible way. Most bad moods and mental attitudes are the result of something that happened to us in the past. It is vital to your mind, soul, body and your life on the whole that you stay in the present with all your thoughts and feelings.

If you have too much time―volunteer it. We usually think that the problems we have are huge, although if you’ll try to go to hospital, you’ll see that there are a lot of people who have more severe problems. Moreover, you’ll see that people are still working, smiling, and laughing. This kind of work will definitely help you understand that your problems are very small and maybe even funny.

Don’t forget to be creative! Creating doesn’t include only painting or playing an instrument, it also includes cooking, sewing, writing, photographing and many other activities. While concentrating on creating you will forget how you have been feeling.

All you have to do is to take control of your emotions and make them positive instead of letting them control you. Making yourself feel better isn’t that hard. it’s hard only to start doing something that would lift up your mood.Title: Lift up your mood.
