We may disagree on what scares us and we may argue over what makes a good scary movie, but if there’s one thing most movie watchers can agree on it’s this: We all like to be frightened! And we really like to be scared by what we don’t understand, especially the supernatural.
Checking the closets for monsters or leaving the hallway light on before going to bed are worthwhile duties if we’ve just watched a great ghostly movie. But just how many great ghost movies are there? Sadly, not as many as we’d like. We’ve 1)compiled a list of six 2)creepy ghost stories. Read on, 3)dispute our choices, but most importantly, don’t go into the light!
The Uninvited (1944)
Many horror fans consider The Uninvited to be the first great ghost story movie. Directed by Lewis Allen, the picture finds brother and sister Ray Milland and Ruth Hussey buying a country house that’s haunted by two female ghosts - one 4)murderous, the other friendly and sad. The house also poses problems with its odd sounds, smells and temperature shifts, which worry the new 5)tenants. Worse, the evil ghost is 6)attempting to murder the next-door neighbor, a pretty girl with whom Milland is 7)smitten. Wonderfully 8)paced with a beautifully ghostly atmosphere, The Uninvited deserves its status as a 9)nerve-racking 10)icon.
The Ring (2002)
In this remade of the Japanese film Ringu, Naomi Watts plays a young, divorced journalist who 11)investigates a videotape that could potentially have something to do with the death of her niece, as well as her three teenage friends. What does she discover? Well, when you watch the tape, you’ll die in seven days, and some creepy little girl/angry ghost named Samara Morgan will come and get you. Crossing into real life through the TV screen, she’ll crawl out of your set and simply scare you to death. Movie fans, 12)couch potatoes and anyone who still hasn’t 13)gotten around to buying a DVD player - 14)beware!
The Innocents (1961)
Who doesn’t love a creepy-kid movie? In The Innocents, a re-working of Henry James注1’ novel The Turn of the Screw, Deborah Kerr stars as a 15)governess hired by Michael Redgrave to care for two kids. Are these children just 16)precocious little trouble-makers? Or, are they under the control of the 17)deceased evil former servants? The governess sticks around to find out, which, as it turns out, probably isn’t such a good idea.
The Others (2001)
This 18)unsettling ghost story, directed by Alejandro Amenábar, combines 19)atmospheric chills with a heartbreaking 20)premise. The always impressive Nicole Kidman plays the mother of two light-sensitive kids living in an old house as she waits for her husband to return from World War II. Creepy things happen, including talking ghosts, strange servants and the 21)intermittent 22)possession of the young daughter. Old fashioned and effectively gothic, The Others recalls classic ghost stories of the past while keeping the audience guessing - is Kidman 23)nuts? Just what are the servants up to? And what is wrong with her kids? The Others also scores for its twist ending. This is truly a modern classic.
Don’t Look Now (1973)
Don’t Look Now is one of the scariest movies ever made. It’s also one of the saddest and, by the film’s end, 24)astoundingly shocking. Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland star as a couple staying in Venice after their daughter dies. 25)Commissioned to restore a church, Sutherland attempts to work while Christie befriends two strange middle-aged sisters, one of whom is 26)psychic. The psychic tells Christie that their daughter has communicated that she is happy, but warns Sutherland of
danger. The story (adapted from a Daphne du Maurier注2 tale) is fascinating, and Venice has never felt so chilling. This is not a romantic lovers’ getaway, but a place of shadows, 27)doom and a creepy creature in a red coat. A masterpiece!
The Shining (1980)
We all saw Cabin Fever, but here’s some serious, serious cabin fever注3 as directed by the master, Stanley Kubrick. Living in an 28)isolated hotel, the Torrance family 29)endures the 30)influence of some strange forces as daddy (Jack Nicholson) starts getting a little mentally ill. Nicholson’s caretaker/writer not only talks with the ghosts of the hotel’s past, he also attempts to 31)seduce one - the beautiful woman in Room 237. When she turns into a bony old woman, even he’s freaked out. And then there’s poor little boy Danny (Danny Lloyd), who has the ability to “shine.” He creates a friend named Tony out of his finger while seeing some images, for example, two dead girls in the hallway and an elevator 32)gushing 33)tidal waves of blood. From the opening shot to the closing 34)finale, The Shining is 35)stunningly directed and 36)stupendously 37)upsetting.

美国版午夜凶铃

《威尼斯疑魂》是有史以来最恐怖的电影之一，它同时也是最叫人心酸的一部。在电影结束之时，你会感到无比震惊。朱莉・克里斯蒂和唐纳德・萨瑟兰饰演一对丧女后来到威尼斯的夫妇。萨瑟兰受委托去修复一座教堂，想投入到工作中去；而克里斯蒂则与一对古怪的中年修女交上了朋友―她们其中一个是灵媒。灵媒告诉克里斯蒂，他们的女儿跟她通灵，说自己很快乐，但警告萨瑟兰会有危险。故事（改编自达夫妮・杜穆里埃的一个故事）本身相当吸引，威尼斯也从未如此令人心寒。这不是爱人出逃的浪漫之地，而是被阴影、厄运和可怕的红衣怪物笼罩的地方。一部杰作！
闪灵
我们都看过《尸骨无存》，但下面这部由大师斯坦利・库布里克执导的电影呈现的才是真正的幽闭烦躁症。托兰斯一家住在一间与世隔绝的酒店里。他们受到怪力的影响，爸爸（杰克・尼科尔森饰）的精神开始出现异常。尼科尔森饰演的看守人兼作家不仅和酒店过去的鬼魂说话，更试图引诱其中的一个―237号房里的漂亮女人。当她变成一个瘦骨嶙峋的老妇人后，连尼科尔森也被吓了一跳。然后是拥有“闪灵”能力的可怜小男孩丹尼（丹尼・劳埃德饰）。他能看到一连串景象，例如在走廊的两个死去的女孩，升降梯里如海啸般涌出的血；他还用手指创造了一个名叫托尼的朋友。从开场镜头到最后一幕，《闪灵》的执导手法极为高超，令人产生强烈的不安。
