Martin Juul:

ZEST:What inspires your idea of this series? Please talk aboutthe relationship of food and art?

Martin Juul:The series for Waterfront Shopping is developed by an advertising agency and my work, in this case, came after the initial idea was created. What I bring to the artwork is input to which elements and designs to use in order to enhance and clarify the concept as much as possible. For instance what kind of clothing that will look the most like soft-ice. It’s hard not to think of art when you work with food. Food is basically art!

ZEST:Generally, how do you complete your work(from idea to finished) ? Is there any interesting experience to share?

Martin Juul:In this case I had a meeting with the art director and discussed which 7, of the over 20 sketches they had made, I thought would make the best images. The process of the actual shoot starts by finding the right props for each image. When you try to make a tie look like wine it’s very important to find the exactly right colour and to make a cucumber look like a hanger it needs to bend in just the right way. Then comes the challenge of making belts soar in free air and how to arrange a pearl-necklace so that it looks like spaghetti. For the belts I had a smith make long aluminium rails to glue underneath the belts to be able to make them turn and bend in ways a branch would.A lot of my work is based on gut feelings does this actually look like a branch, does this tie look as wine being poured into a glass and when does the scarf look exactly like soft-ice...When the shots are done all shots are retouched in Photoshop and then delivered to my client. The whole process took three weeks.

Martin Juul:

ZEST:What's the most interesting thing when you creating this work? Someone said that you are what you eat, what do you think about it?And what is your next step?

Martin Juul:Exploring the concept and understanding what elements to use to make the images work and at the same time look appealing. I agree with you are what you eat!Next step I want to do more personal projects. Most of what I do is advertising campaigns and portraits, and I’m planning do a exhibition within the next year or two.

Martin Juul:

ZEST:What does imagination and innovation mean to you and how does it affect our life in your mind?

Martin Juul:I always force myself to turn what I see upside down an try to see things in different contexts.I find that you need to practice to stay creative. If you stop using your imagination you will also stop the creative an innovative mindflow.

Martin Juul:

ZEST:What is good photographic work?

Martin Juul:For me it’s being able to make pictures that tells a story and doing it in a interesting way.A lot of the campaigns I do includes several elements that, combined, tells a story. Often, it’s a struggle to make everything fit in and still make a picture that’s well composed and easy to read.
