Achauffeur transfer from JW Marriott hotel transports us smoothly into the Virgin atlantic lounge at heathrow terminal 3. a seamless check-in and we walk into the Virgin clubhouse. sprawling, equipped with a hair salon (I don’t remember seeing hair services in too many airline lounges!), the cowshed spa, wi-fi, a funky, busy bar and a deli and, I later discover also a movie screening zone. there are some great spaces for meetings and a concierge team to assist with document printing or phone charging.

I board the new virgin atlantic a330 to JfK new York, and, as I turn into the “new” upper class am a little stumped: Purple-pink mood lighting, swarovski crystal curtains, flashes of Virgin’s famous red and a stylish, sassy bar…am I really on a flight?

having flown the old upper class on the Delhi-London leg I can immediately sense the difference. the new espresso coloured leather seat is more spacious than ever, with an extra 1.5 inch seat width that reclines up to 50 per cent and a 7 ft 2 inch bed surface when flattened out.

As I settle in I am totally taken in by the entertainment system. Each suite comes equipped with a 12.1 inch touchscreen monitor with a touchscreen handset, loaded with an all new entertainment system called JAM. I can even hook up my phone, USB stick or tablet to view my own personal content on the screen! Now how cool is that.

It gets even better… These new A330 aircraft have the AeroMobile system installed so you can make and receive phone calls and send texts from your own mobile phone! No, I didn’t try that out though how I wish I had done it. Imagine calling back home from 40,000 feet in the skies…

At 2.7 metres, the longest bar in the sky beckons. Just as I was getting cozy with my seat and the well loaded movies library, my co-passenger trundles up and suggests we hit the bar. The mixologist shakes up a neat pink Gin concoction which is their on-flight cocktail of the month. I don’t remember having a more enjoyable long haul flight in a while. Lots of laughter, chatter and bonding around the bar follow. Time literally flies.

The menu offers a Western, an Oriental and a vegetarian option. I go for the Thai chicken curry with noodles. It comes hot, fragrant and fresh to the table. Though I am not a fan of inflight food, I do enjoy the meal which even comes accompanied with salt and pepper in a funky mini cocktail shaker!

While the entire experience does not make for a very formal, private First Class one that some airlines offer, it is part funky, part luxury, young at heart with excellent, happy and friendly staff everywhere, from the lounges to on board which really makes a big difference.

The new Upper Class Suite and is currently only on three of Virgin’s new A330 aircraft. Virgin has ordered a total of 10 of these aircraft, and in time this new Upper Class will be fitted on all of them. The suite comes to India in July.
