Sanwei Study: Used to Have Endless Arrival of Guests

There is a two-story small building with an antique flavor on the south of Cultural Palace of Nationalities, Tonlinge Road next to Xidan, which makes that street quite elegant, and that is Sanwei Study, which in my eyes is one of the symbols of Beijing’s culture.

Sanwei Study is run by an old couple over seventy. The husband’s surname is Li, who was a worker when he was young and was imprisoned on Culture Revolution. Nie Gannu was his inmate, and you would see there are a few poems for “Li Si”, which refers to him in his poetry.

Boss Li ran the Sanwei Study in the1980s. Sanwei Study became a small position of ideas communication in the turbulent periods and quite a lot of cultural activities were held here such as the launch of the new book The Death of the Yellow River. In 1993, the poet Feng Yidai and author Huang Zongying held their wedding right at Sanwei Study.

In the new century, the Sanwei Study was narrowly suffered to be demolished and it was kept thanks to the old couple’s great effort. However, the business was slack gradually because the buildings nearby were almost knocked down and the inconvenience of the transportation. The influence of the lectures exceeded the selling at that time, which became the sigh of the bookstore.

One day the old lady who called herself “Lao Liu of the Sanwei Study” telephoned me to attend the lecture, and to my shame, it was the first time I had entered Sanwei Study. Since then, I am the frequent visitor there.

The first floor sells books and the space is quite large, however, the kinds of the books aren’t abundant and updated in time. It is said that the old couple would go to the wholesale market at their age. Thus we could conclude that their center isn’t on ground floor.

The second floor could contain at most a hundred people. But there are two or three hundred people attending the lecture and they crowd at the door, on the stairs and even people on the first floor would listen quietly. Chen Danqing, Cha Jianying, Cui Weiping, He Weifang and I’ve heard that nearly any public intellectuals, you could think of, have attended Sanwei Study to give lectures.

One of my jobs in The Beijing News is in charge of lecture which is called “Beijing News Lectures”. I have invited quite a few scholars including Jiang Ping and so on to give speech. Teacher Qin Hui’s lecture was once moved to Sanwei Study, when I saw the speaker in high spirits and listeners were very absorbed, I was somewhat slightly influenced while squatting in the crowds.

Joint Publishing Company Bookshop: They Are All Culture Landmarks

Joint Publishing Company Bookshop is located close to Beach and next to China National Art Gallery. Beach is the site of old Peking University’s red building. And it was from here that the students of Peking University were going to kill Zhaojialou on May Fourth Movement. There are woods outside of China National Art Gallery, where people constantly play cards there. At the beginning of the eighties, Ai Weiwei and others organized a street art show in the wood so that artistic youths at that time all became extraordinary. It must be the culture landmark, since Joint Publishing Company Bookshop is sited on this spot.

If we select the favorite bookstore for scholars, Joint Publishing Company Bookshop is the first choice or else is the second. However, I just seldom go there, instead I am addicted to a small restaurant next to it. Every time I pass Joint Publishing Company Bookshop on my way home tipsily, I would confess that I do not choose to enter the bookstore again. I sail tipsily and feel very guilty.

Joint Publishing Company Bookshop is divided into top, center and ground floors. The moment you enter the room you can see bookshelves of best sellers, and Chen Danqing, Li Ling, Ma Weidu and Liu Yu’s books are all there. That may be the most expensive place amid whole Beijing’s books. The second floor is for activities such as salons, etc. Differing from Sanwei Study’s ideas communication, here is mainly for knowledge that he who loves books enjoys to come. But I heard it would be canceled. Could it be that they are going to run Starbucks?

The stairs between the three floors are popular place of college students, and on the left side are their special seats. The unique scene of the bookstore is that rows of people carrying books to read.

The bottom floor is like a tiny library armed with all sorts of books. But it’s too big and I would lose my breath after a while and all at sea to decide which to buy. I prefer to small bookshops for the happiness of book collection.

Hanfen Bookshop: Loneliness in the Busy Streets

Hanfen Bookshop is located on Wangfujing Street where there is much noisy and is not suitable for bookstores. But some Commercial Presses that do not covet wealth still allow Hanfen Bookshop operate, so Hanfen Bookshop stains less the stink of money and possesses more book scent. A church and Hanfen Bookshop are my favorites in Wangfujing.

I made acquaintance with Hanfen Bookshop long before. Approximately three or four years ago, I cooperated with Hanfen Bookshop for beijing News Lectures and I invited Teacher Xie Zhihao, Lai Shengchuan, Zhang Ming and Gao Jianqun, etc. to deliver speeches. One time, Zhang Ming was much disappointed when he was invited to lecture about college education saying only few people came. I came near to replying that listeners would be more whenever there were speakers. Ho ho, and since then, I would feel embarrassed when I invite scholars. The lecture is surely not exciting if listeners are very few. That is the loneliness of Hanfen Bookshop in busy streets.

Hanfen Bookshop also has three floors. The second floor stores art books and the lecture is right there too where listeners can either sit or skim while listening. The surrounding of the lecture is the most pleasant I’ve ever seen. Art book is the characteristic of Hanfen Bookshop.

Usually there are all kinds of best sellers on the first floor, which I like to go. Because social sciences books and literature books are all over there, I thus, mostly buy on the bottom floor. Books published by The Commercial Press occupy quite a lot of shelves. Roaming in front of the bookshelves, it occurs to you many histories about the ancient Commercial Press.

On the corner of the first floor there hangs a pair of antithetical couplets that is “The reason for every unabated clan is just to do good. The first virtue thing is to read.” I like them very much so I took photo by my mobile phone and uploaded to my twitter which was recognized by many net friends at first sight knowing they were form Hanfen Bookshop.

All Sages Bookstore: Spiritual Home for the Intellectuals

Just now I wrote in my twitter “when I describe bookstores in Beijing, I’d like to show off a bit at All Sages Bookstore. While learning, if you should know nothing of Liu Suli, then you will be nobody even if you are a hero. Well, why this isn’t rhymed? If you do not know Chen Jinnan then it will be in vain even if you are somebody. And you will lag behind Liu Shaoqi if you don't study within three days. If you are not acquainted with Zhou Runfa it will be futile even you are a hero. Among all the name I mentioned, Teacher Liu Suli’s name is somewhat difficult to deal with!”

Having done so, net friends played the word games right now and here are two excellent. One is “While learning, if you should know nothing of Liu Suli then you cannot afford to hurt even if you are a hero.” the other one is “While learning, if you should know nothing of Liu Suli, then you would be a swan sails in dirty mud.”

Among the bosses of bookshops, Liu Suli must be the most famous one. His experience contributes him to a legend,thus All Sages Bookstore is known for a spiritual home of intellectuals. Last year or so, All Sages Bookstore was chosen as The Best Ideas of Humanities and Social Sciences Bookstore. As for this reputation, it is not at least overdone and to some extent, Joint Publishing Company Bookshop has been replaced by All Sages Bookstore.

The point All Sages Bookstore appeals to people owes half to its books and half to the Sober Cafe. Open-minded people buy cultivated books. Whenever I read in All Sages Bookstore I could meet many acquaintances and friends who all come for the quality of the bookshop.

I was about to go All Sages Bookstore to sign for my newly-published Age of Rash Fellows while I wrote this article. I just wrote one thin book and I would be extremely happy if it could have a tiny space in All Sages Bookstore. What’s more, if I should sign on the book, I will then have to drink a few cups to celebrate it.

Years ago when I visited the Sober Cafe people there were few so that I could have the chance to sit in the sofa for a lazy afternoon which was quite comfortable. However, because of its reputation and the hospitable keeper, I find it difficult to find a seat now. I have to think about a slogan for them: Let Yao Chen advertise for the cafe in order to make more people gather to the Sober Cafe.

I adore Boss Liu and boss of Sober Cafe as well. To a great extent of the All Sages Bookstore’s atmosphere, I always boast to run a small bookshop by myself. But I cannot run one because I know how hard to operate a bookstore.
