Introduction

Language is one part of culture. Serving as a special cultural phenomenon, language plays a dramatically important role in a culture. There are contact, interaction, and influence existing between them. If you want to acquire one language, you must learn something about the culture. The reverse is also true.

The definition of culture

Culture is a term that has many different inter-related meanings. For example, in 1952, Alfred Kroeber and Clyde Kluckhohn compiled a list of 164 definitions of "culture" in Culture: A Critical Review of Concepts and Definitions. However, the word "culture" is most commonly used in three basic senses: 1. Excellence of taste in the fine arts and humanities, also known as high culture. 2. An integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior that depends upon the capacity for symbolic thought and social learning. 3. The set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution, organization, or group.

Relationship between Language and Culture

To begin with, language is part of a culture; language is deeply rooted in a culture. And it is the main medium through which culture is expressed. All in all, language embodies the values and meanings of a culture.

Moreover, culture is the main part of a language. Geertz, for example, defines culture as "a historically transmitted pattern of meanings embodied in symbols, a system of inherited conceptions expressed in symbolic foam by means of which men communicate, perpetuate and develop their knowledge about and attitudes towards life."

The Importance of Cultural Teaching

International communication has been constantly on the increase. Thus, great changes have taken place in the language environment in China and in people's language awareness. The social function of language has become well recognized. english as a tool of communication has been playing a pivotal role in carrying out international exchange and cooperation.

Strategies in cultural teaching

1.situational language teaching

2.reading and studying English novels

3.visual aids to language teaching

4.co-operation in language learning

The goal we should achieve in senior language teaching

(1)Managing to understanding English idioms and proverbs as well as the meaning lying behind;

(2)Managing to understand the allusion and mythologies in communicative performance;

(3)Managing to know the writers, artists, scientists and politicians as well as their contributions etc;

(4)Managing to know the politics and economies of the main English countries

Conclusion

Permeating culture teaching in English teaching is an inevitable outcome as the reform of senior English teaching deepens. As a senior high English teacher, we should first keep on going in studying basic English which is the first step. And more importantly English teachers should carry out culture teaching to help students feel the western values and traditions.
