Once upon a time,there was an old merchant who had three sons.

“To whom shall I leave my fortune?”he wondered.“It must be to my cleverest son. But which one is the cleverest?”

从前,有一个老商人,他有三个儿子。

“我将把我的财产留给谁呢?”他想知道,“它必须归于最聪明的儿子。可哪一个最聪明呢?”

He called his three sons to him.“Here is some money.”he told them,“Each of you takes one coin to buy something that will fill this room.The one who can do this shall have my fortune.”

他把三个儿子叫到跟前,“这里有点钱,”他对他们说,“你们每人拿一个硬币去买东西,买来的东西要充满这个房间,谁能做到这一点,谁就将继承我的财产。”

“It is a big room,”said the eldest son.

“One coin will not buy very much,”said the second son.

But the youngest son said nothing.He thought a while,and then he smiled.“Come,brothers,”he said,“Let us go to the market.”

“这是个大房子。”大儿子说。

“一枚硬币买不了多少东西。”二儿子说。

可小儿子什么也没有说。他想了一会儿之后便笑了。“走,哥哥们,”他说,“我们到市场去。”

The eldest son bought straw with his coin. But one coin bought only a bit of straw. Even when he had spread it as much as he could,the straw covered only a corner of the room.

大儿子用他那枚硬币买了稻草,但买的并不多,他尽量大面积地铺,结果也只是覆盖了房间的一个角落。

The second son bought sand with his coin. But one coin bought only a bit of sand. Even when he had spread it as much as he could,the sand covered only half of the floor.

“What did you buy?”both elder sons angrily asked the youngest,“You don’t have any straw or any sand.”

二儿子买了沙子,一枚硬币买的沙子很有限,他尽量将沙子撒开,才覆盖了地板的一半。

“你买了什么?”两个哥哥生气地问小弟,“你买的不是稻草,也不是沙子吧。”

“I bought this,”said the youngest son.

“A candle!”cried his brothers,“What good is a candle?”

“Watch,” said the youngest son.

“我买了这个。”小弟弟说。

“一支蜡烛!”他的两个哥哥喊道,“一支蜡烛有什么好的?”

“你看吧。”小弟弟说。

He lit the candle,and all at once the room was filled from wall to wall,from ceiling to floor. It was filled with light.

“Although you are the youngest, you are the cleverest of my sons.” The old merchant said.

他把蜡烛点上,立刻,整个房间,从墙到墙,从天花板到地板,全部充满了光亮。

“虽然你最小,但你是我最聪明的儿子。”老商人说。
