The Aegean Sea is part of Mediterranean Sea lying between the coasts of Greece and Turkey. It covers an area of 210 thousand square kilometers, stretching for about 660 kilometers from north to south. Its maximum depth is 3,543 meters, found to the east of Crete.

For the origin of the name Aegean, there are various explanations. Some said that it was named after the Greek town of the Aegea while others said that it was named after Aegea, a queen of the Amazons, and others still claim that the Aegean Sea was given its name after the Aigaion, the sea goat in Greek mythology. The most famous story of its name is perhaps that of Aegeus, king of Athens and the father of Theseus, who drown himself in the Aegean Sea when he thought his son had died.

The story happened on the island of Crete. King Minos of Crete declared war on Athens because the Athenians had killed his son Androgeo. The Athens was defeated and therefore became subjects of the Minoan Empire. King Minos then demanded that every nine years, seven Athenian boys and seven Athenian girls would be sent to Crete and devoured by the mythical Minotaur, a monster with the body of a man and the head of a bull, who lived in the Labyrinth.

Theseus, the son of Aegeus, decided that he would kill the Minotaur and end the cruel sacrifices. He took the place of one of the seven young boys and left for Crete. He told his father Aegeus that they would hang black sails as a show of mourning, but if they survived and successfully killed the monster, they would hang white sails on the journey back.

After arriving at Crete, he met and fell in love with Ariadne, daughter of King Minos. She gave him a magic sword and a ball of string, namely “Ariadne’s Clue”. Theseus killed the Minotaur and found his way out of the Labyrinth with the clue of the string. The hero, his lover Ariadne and his companies escaped to the port and started for home under the cover of night. But he forgot to raise the white sails as he had promised to Aegeus.

When Aegeus saw the ship with black sails in distance, he thought his son was dead. He jumped off the cliffs into the sea from the temple of Poseidon and drowned himself.
