Born in Taipei, Taiwan on November 6,1968, Yang moved to San Jose, California at the age of eight, with his mother and brother. His father died when Yang was two. He claimed that despite his mother being an English teacher, he only knew one English word (shoe) on his arrival.

Being the son of a widowed mother his earlier life went through all types of hardships faced by human beings in distress. Having taken his graduation from the Piedmont Hills High School he went to receive his B. S. and M. S. degrees in the subject of Electrical Engineering from the University of Stanford. It was while pursuing his studies in Ph. D. in the same subject in the University of Stanford that he met David Filo and the duo created an Internet of website consisting of a directory of other websites in April 1994 called "Jerry's Guide to the World Wide Web". The site was renamed into Yahoo, an acronym for "Yet Another Hierarchical1 Officious Oracle2" ,but according to both Yang and Filo, this very name was selected because they liked the general definition of a yahoo: "rude, unsophisticated, uncouth3". Yahoo! itself first resided on Yang's student workstation, "Akebono," while the software was lodged on Filo's computer, "Konishiki"--both named after legendary sumo wrestlers.

Jerry and David soon found they were not alone in wanting a single place to find useful Web sites. Before long, hundreds of people were accessing their guide from well beyond the Stanford trailer. Word spread from friends to what quickly became a significant, loyal audience throughout the closely-knit Internet community. Yahoo! celebrated its first million-hit day in the fall of 1994, translating to almost 100 thousand unique visitors.

Due to the torrent of traffic and enthusiastic reception Yahoo! was receiving, the founders knew they had a potential business on their hands. In March 1995, the pair incorporated the business and met with dozens of Silicon Valley venture capitalists. They eventually came across Sequoia Capital, the well-regarded firm whose most successful investments included Apple Computer, Atari, Oracle and Cisco Systems. They agreed to fund Yahoo! in April 1995 with an initial investment of nearly$2 million.

The launching of this new device compelled them to take a leave of absence and also postponed their doctoral programs for an indefinite period. They secured a second round of funding in Fall 1995 from investors Reuters Ltd. and Softbank. Yahoo! launched a highly-successful IPO in April 1996 with a total of 49 employees.

The Yahoo! was started as a web portal with a web directory for the sake of providing an extensive range of products and services for online activities. In the present age even in against the stiff competition and the dominant presence of rival companies it is at present hailed4 as one of the leading internet brands and has the most trafficked network on the internet.

In his professional life at Yahoo ! Jerry Yang is a member of the Yahoo!'s Board of Directors and works closely with the Company's CEOand executive team for the development and apposite execution of corporate business strategies and concentrating and channelizing the future direction of the company. Mr. Yang is at present hailed as key member on the Board of Directors of Alibaba, the Asian Pacific American Community Fund, Cisco and Yahoo! Japan. Being an efficient student and above all a successful entrepreneur has been nominated and placed in high esteem on the Stanford University Board of Trustees.

In the recent years he was the focal point of media attention. It was for the controversy his one statement created, when his public comments regarding Yahoo's role in the imprisonment of reporters in the People's Republic of China, above all his defense of Yahoo's willingness to turn over the identity of Chinese reporters who were later jailed. Jerry Yang recently wrote a letter to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice requesting her assistance in freeing the jailed dissidents5. Yang established the Yahoo! Human Rights Fund, a fund to provide "humanitarian and legal support" to online dissidents. One of the first public projects of the fund was financing the establishment of the Laogai Museum, a museum opened by noted Chinese dissident Harry Wu to showcase China's laogai penal system.

Yang was also criticized by shareholders for rejecting an offer of$33 a share from Microsoft in May 2008--Microsoft subsequently walked away from the negotiations. On November 17, Yahoo! announced that Yang will step down6 as CEO as soon a replacement is named.

In personal life he is married to Akiko Yamazaki, a Japanese American,by profession an anthropologist7. In February2007, Jerry Yang and his wife gave $75 million to Stanford University, their alma mater, the bulk8 of which went to building the "Jerry Yang and Akiko Yamazaki Environment and Energy Building."
