Abstract：Based on the short story of Mansfield, Katherine, Garden Party, this paper centers on the connotation of the “garden”. The “garden” in this short story means isolation from the society, while “out of garden” to the dead man(carter)’s home means Laura’s mental growth.

In Garden Party, we can see the word “garden” quite often. The name of the story contains “garden”, the whole story occurs in the “garden” , and the conflict is also in should they delay the “garden” party. It’s obvious that author has infused deep meaning in this word.

At first sight, for the Sheridan’s children, the garden is a wonderful paradise which is far from the darkness of the society. But actually it is a confined area which makes them be isolated from real world. Like “the garden of Eden”--a place which seems paradise without knowing real sufferings of the society. In this story, Laura’s parents always tend to let their children stay in their “garden” and children were “ forbidden to set foot there ( the little cottage). Because in their eyes only their garden is good and safe place. Their garden is lovely place--“the roses are only flowers that impress people at garden-parties” “the green bushes bowed down as though they had been visited by archangels”.”against the karakas…and they were so lovely”. On the contrast, the carter man’s home is a place where “disgust and sordid” and with “cabbage stalks, sick hens, and tomato cans”.

Laura’s “out of garden” means out of isolation. She “shut their garden gates” and “ going down the hill” and heads to the maturity. Before that she was an innocent girl with pure heart. She thought the worker are wonderful and they should show sympathy for carter. She took it for granted. However, she got strong against from her family. Since then she started to really know the difference between them and lower class. But in her depth,something was telling it is not right. Then, the visit to the carter’s home reveals her many thing which she hadn’t know. She found the carter is in peace. Only then, does she realize that death comes to every one without class distinction.In death,he carter “ was far from all those things, he was wonderful, beautiful.” . After dead, the carter finally come to the peace and happy in the place where is no distinction. Everyone is equal there.

In conclusion, the word “garden” here has its own deep meaning. When read the story, readers shouldn’t only remain in superficial, and should dig out its deep meaning . It’s the best way to enjoy the literature.
